The market for large size type notes remains very strong with new material becoming difficult to find, especially in higher grades. There just does not seem to be enough good material to satisfy the new collectors coming into the market everyday. The emphasis is on original notes with strong eye appeal. A clean and lightly circulated note will sell for more than a note that is a little higher grade but has a heavy fold or a very close margin. Grade is not the only factor determining price - eye appeal and originalness are also just as important, if not more so. Be sure to evaluate the whole note when deciding what to buy.
Fr# refers to the numbering system developed by Robert Friedberg and used in his book "Paper Money of the United States."

| Fr#16 | 1862 | $1 | This is a beautiful example of this early note and in a very collectible grade. The bottom and right margins are close but the left and top are very full, especially the top. The colors are bright and the note is free of the edge tears so common on this issue due to the thin paper that was used. There are 3 vertical folds and some handling. | EF |
$750 | |
| Fr#18 | 1869 | $1 | A well circulated but very solid example of the popular Technicolor note, and in an affordable grade. The note has great eye appeal, in spite of it's grade, because of the bright colors and excellent centering on both sides. The paper is lightly but evenly soiled with no defects, with the margins straight and solid, and the corners full and sharp. | VG-F |
$250 | |
| Fr#40 | 1923 | $1 | A very tough note to find in high end circulated grades. A very clean and bright note with excellent centering. SOLD | VF + |
$125 | |
| Fr#40 | 1923 | $1 | A popular one year type note and the last large size Legal Tender $1 note. The bottom margin is close, notably at the lower left. The color is good but there is a small pinch and light handling that prevent a Choice grade. | CU |
$275 | |
| Fr#40 | 1923 | $1 | A top quality note that needs just a bit more bottom margin to be a Gem. The paper is fresh and original with strong embossing and color. The back is very well centered. | CH CU |
$490 | |
| Fr#40 | 1923 | $1 | A superb note with a low serial number, and a radar too! A4224A. A beautiful and original note that has great color and wonderful embossing. The centering is slightly skewed, but not enough to affect its great look. For those wanting a special Fr#40, this beautiful, original note.could be it! | G CU |
$675 | |
| Fr#50 | 1880 | $2 | An outstanding note with a large brown seal and red serial numbers. This one is very well centered with broad, full margins and nice square corners. So many of these notes seem to have rounded corners or skewed centering, but this one is great! There is one center fold and nothing else to spoil its outstanding eye appeal. SOLD | CH AU |
$715 | |
| Fr#60 | 1917 | $2 | A fresh and original note that is kept from a CU grade by handling at both ends. The note is crisp and clean with close but acceptable horizontal margins. Lot of eye appeal and value in this nice note. | CH AU |
$180 | |
| Fr#61a | 1862 | $5 | A popular Civil War issue and in strong demand in all grades. This example has strong color for the grade, along with excellent margins. The only impairment is a small piece missing at the upper left, in the margin only. It is a minor distraction on this otherwise solid note. | VG |
$230 | |
| Fr#76 | 1880 | $5 | This is a better variety with the large peach seal and blue serial numbers. The bottom margin is close and there are some light stains on the left side on the back. While the note is on the lower end of the grade, the colors are good and the paper, though with lots of folds, still retains good crispness. | VF |
$450 | |
| Fr#87 | 1907 | $5 | Excellent margins on evenly circulated Pioneer family note. The margins are good and the paper clean, but a bit too soft for a higher grade. | F+ |
$85 | |
| Fr#88 | 1907 | $5 | A crisp and beautiful note with great color and adequate centering. There are two very light vertical folds and light wrinkling in the top and bottom margins. A fresh and attractive note. | EF |

| Fr#91 | 1907 | $5 | A perfect XF note with 3 vertical folds and light handling. The margins are close but clear of the design. | EF |
$215 | |
| Fr#91 | 1907 | $5 | Excellent centering and color on this fresh and original note that retains much embossing. There are 2 vertical folds and light handling but the paper is crisp and clean. A superb note sure to please. | EF - AU |
$250 | |
| Fr#96 | 1869 | $10 | A beautiful rainbow $10 note with green and blue tints to the paper. There is a small piece of paper on the seal, as printed, that was apparently stuck to the paper when the note was printed. It is evident under close examination and does not impair its look in any way. The seal is a little light but that is offset by the fresh paper and excellent centering on the front. The back is centered low with the center design just touching at the bottom. A bright and fresh note that is certain to please its new owner. | CH CU+ |
$3850 | |
| Fr#121 | 1901 | $10 | Nice color and strong centering make this a good looking Bison for most any collection. I feel that the note is just a bit shy of a full Very Fine but will surely please. | AVF |
$575 | |
| Fr#122 | 1901 | $10 | Another nice Bison note with great red color and nice eye appeal, but too many folds to be graded a full VF. The bottom margin is close, there is a tiny nick in the left margin and the paper is toned just a bit. | AVF |
$575 | |
| Fr#122 | 1901 | $10 | A bright and well centered Bison note that has good body and clean paper. A perfect note for the grade. | VF |
$675 | |
| Fr#123 | 1923 | $10 | This is a very popular type that is tough to find in higher circulated grades. This note is crisp and clean with no problems to spoil it's good look. A tear at the center up into the portrait has been professionally repaired and is very difficult to see. The person that I bought the note from told me about the repair, and if not for that, I doubt that the majority of the persons who look at the note would ever know. The note is well centered with good color. | AVF |
$675 | |
| Fr#134 | 1880 | $20 | A rarer Fr# with approximately 30 notes known from a small printing of only 744,000 notes. This is the variety with the large red spikeless seal and blue serial numbers. | Fr#224 | 1896 | $1 | A beautiful Educational note with tons of eye appeal. The note has 6 light folds/bends, with none heavy enough to be immediately noticed. The paper is fresh, clean and bright with the serial numbers strongly embossed. At first glance the note looks AU or UNC. SOLD | VF -EF |

| Fr#224 | 1896 | $1 | A fantastic, completely original Educational $1 that has all you could ask for in a note! The embossing is strong with even the tips of the seal showing through, in addition to the serial numbers. The paper is not flat but has a rough feel from the raised ink and the ambossing. The corners are sharp and the margins are excellent. I do not have a list full of Gem notes, but I do find a real Gem once in awhile, and this one is the real thing. If you want the very best you don't have to spend $3000+ or whatever the market will bear. Superb | G CU |

This is the type of note that I strive to find as it is original and in a strong collector grade with the look of a new note but at a fraction of the cost. Original notes are tough to find as they are constantly being "inproved" and sold at higher grades. This one has escaped improvement and is yours to enjoy. SOLD | EF - AU |

$1250 | |
